Wonderness: A Return to Our Roots

Every living system is organized around a center. Trees grow from roots hidden beneath the soil. Ecosystems take shape through intricate relationships between the elements and the life they sustain. When the center is stable, growth happens naturally. The same principle applies to human beings, communities and nature itself.

After a decade of exploration and expansion, Wonderness enters a new decade by looking back to what has always been there. Before seeking a deeper connection with nature, there is an invitation to recognize the nature within ourselves and the foundations from which everything else can grow.

At Wonderfruit, the physical journey into Wonderness almost mirrors this movement inward. Leave the upbeat rhythms of the Upper Fields and follow the path down towards the lake. Music begins to soften. Mountains, water and lush vegetation come into view as the Lower Fields draw closer, and the surroundings settle into a gentler pace.

Surrounded by greenery, Wonderness is a collective space to pause, an alcohol-free sanctuary where movement, meditation, healing and moments of stillness unfold away from the wider energy of The Fields. There is a familiarity to it, like returning to a quieter corner of home where you can settle, restore and find your bearings again.

Rooted in the Inner Axis

This year, Wonderness returns to the simplest place of all.

Rooted in the Inner Axis is about more than grounding ourselves upon the earth. It is a return to the center from which creation begins, the invisible core that runs through every living being.

Rather than searching outward for balance, this year looks for a grounding force within. To find our inner axis is to understand our own nature more closely and, from there, our relationship with the living world around us.

The five elements offer a way into this connection. Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Aether are understood across cultures as fundamental forces of both the human body and the natural world. We breathe air, drink water, feel warmth and eat what grows from the earth. These same elements move through the landscape and through us, a quiet reminder that a return to nature can also feel like a return to something deeply familiar.

An anchor in the landscape

At the heart of Wonderness, this idea takes physical form through Axis Mundi. Representing Aether, it sits as the breathing heart of Wonderness, an axis where different realms meet and from which the elemental spaces of Earth, Water, Fire and Air unfold into the surrounding landscape.

This year, Axis Mundi begins its transition into a permanent structure, with its first columns and foundations taking root in the Lower Fields. As Wonderness enters a new decade, this acupuncture architecture will begin to settle more deeply into its surroundings, becoming an enduring anchor while life around it continues to shift and evolve with the people, practices and changing environment that bring Wonderness to life.

A journey inward through practice

The same return to our foundations runs through this year’s program, embracing the quiet power of simplicity while exploring the depth held within it. Rather than seeking what is new, Wonderness looks to enduring practices that have stood the test of time. Ceremonies, rituals, medicinal plants, elemental practices, ancient Thai wisdom and sacred knowledge from different cultures remind us that the simplest foundations can often carry the deepest meaning.

Some take their cues directly from the natural world. Wonderness opens with the Rooted in the Inner Axis Opening Ceremony, marking its 11th year and bringing the community together around this year’s theme. Here, Superflow: Fluid Yoga to Honor the Oceans Inside and Out by Eoin Finn of Blissology explores our connection with water through fluid movement and yoga. Re-calling the Khwan of All Things by Conscious Movement Collective draws from the Thai belief in Khwan, the life essence within living things, through movement and shared ritual.

Beyond these practices, the landscape itself continues to offer something to learn from. Near the Ancestral Forest, native stingless bees are among its newest inhabitants, making their home in hives cared for with PureHive. Founded by Paveena “Piak” Viriyaprapakit, PureHive works with native stingless bees to develop bioactive honey for modern wellness, bringing together nature’s intelligence and refined through scientific research.

The initiative began in a rewilding forest in Chumphon, where native bees offered a simple way to support the ecosystem as it restored itself. As the forest grew, so did the hives, revealing a close relationship between the bees, surrounding biodiversity and the honey they produce. In Chumphon, honey gathered from a forest rich in medicinal plants showed particularly high anti-inflammatory activity.

PureHive now brings that same approach to The Fields. As pollinators, the stingless bees support the medicinal plants and native trees we have been growing over the years, while the forest provides food and habitat in return. As they forage across this landscape, we are curious to discover what these plants will eventually bring to their honey, itself traditionally valued for its medicinal properties. What began with planting now becomes part of a wider cycle, connecting the well-being of the forest with our own.

This relationship with nature and well-being extends into Medicinal Plant Village, where more than 30 plant varieties grow among six wooden huts, carrying generations of Thai wisdom around food, medicine and well-being. Thai Spirituality draws on this same connection between body and land, using the five elements and traditional medicinal knowledge to create herbal balms from plants grown in The Fields. Other experiences draw from ancestral traditions, sound, water and meditation, offering different ways to reconnect and turn attention inward. There is no single way back to our center, only different invitations to slow down, listen and pay closer attention to what is already there.

What grows from our roots

Returning to our roots is also a way of recognizing what has grown from them.

Over the past decade, Wonderness has become a meeting place for practitioners, traditions and people from diverse backgrounds. As Wonderness enters a new decade, this year also celebrates the community that has taken shape along the way, honoring the people, knowledge and shared experiences that continue to give this evolving space its life.

Like roots beneath a forest, the things that hold us steady are not always visible. They run quietly beneath the surface, shaping how we grow, connect and meet the world around us. Rooted in the Inner Axis is an invitation to return there, understand our own nature a little more closely and, from that grounded place, find our way outward again.
